No matter where life leads, a thirst for a passion-filled existence can remain strong. For Gatesworth resident Judith Stix, that passion took the form of writing poetry.

When the staff learned of her talents, they created a venue for her to share her works. “I have, on six different occasions, given a whole program on my poetry,” Stix says. “The Gatesworth has arranged a stage, with a chair and table to make it look like a study. They’ve got a lapel microphone for me as well. And for the last three evenings I’ve read [my poems], the resident program director, Kathy Davis, has printed programs.”

Cultivating and celebrating her interest in writing poetry aren’t the only joys her residency at The Gatesworth has brought her. “I’ve been at The Gatesworth for seven years and found a great interest in the wildlife found at the two ponds. I’m very fond of the ducks and dragonflies,” she notes. “I even saw an immense turtle once!”

What it all comes down to, though, is the sense of community and collaboration that The Gatesworth fosters. “The Gatesworth has a wonderful staff that has given a lot of thought to how things work best,” Stix declares. “There’s a lot of communication [ … and] stimulation.” As Stix can attest, clearly, this is the perfect place to bolster one’s vitality and find encouragement in expression.
